Introduction

Welcome to our overview of the State of Colorado's classified staff rules and procedures. This 90-minute course was created to help you manage the classified staff you supervise. Supervisors play an important role at CU, so we developed this course just for you.

Course objective: maximal success; minimal stress.

In this course you'll learn the "rules of the road" for successfully managing in the classified staff system, including how to:

  • Hire new employees;
  • Set performance goals with employees, and monitor their progress in achieving them;
  • Resolve complaints and poor performance while rewarding exemplary work, and Manage employee leave and separations.

Once you learn these human resource management skills, you can maximize your employees' productivity and satisfaction and minimize the chances that you will make the wrong personnel decision or take the wrong action.

First, let’s do a quick study of the purpose and parts of our Human Resources system, beginning with the meaning of “human resources.”
