Genetics & Colorectal Cancer

E-mail Print

In July 2009, NCHPEG completed a year long project supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to develop a multimedia CME/CEU program on genetics and colorectal cancer for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners in the VA system. This program provides CME and CEU credit hours.   It is available to VA providers through its internal system and will soon be available more broadly through NCHPEG’s Web site.

Through this program, providers have access to the information and skills necessary to:

  • Undertake genetic risk assessment for colorectal cancer,
  • Identify patients at increased risk,
  • Refer appropriate patients for genetic counseling and testing, and
  • Target screening and management to the patient’s risk status.

The program includes five interactive colorectal cancer case studies, including Lynch syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis, and familial colorectal cancer. A “toolbox” of disease fact sheets, point-of-care tools, and web-based risk assessment algorithms is also available.

This project was supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
