Understanding how to take and interpret a family health history is essential to providing patient care in the era of genomic medicine. A person’s family history can provide clues about diseases that may run in the family so that providers can implement appropriate screening, interventions, and management plans. Competency in recording and interpreting a medical family tree or genetic family history is a skill that benefits all health professionals regardless of their clinical specialty or the ages of the patients in their care.
